I love the analogy. Every game of rugby which has over time has become considered a classic has a referee who has facilitated play, communicating expectations and enabling players to play the game to the letter of the law, but in a spirit which makes it seem that bit special and memorable. Just like a great lesson! Making it more open would also keep the discussion less personal about them (if they've had a horrid experience they might not want to discuss it)!

Question 3 is a great one...and could actually replace some of the others as a main discussion point - what advice would they give younger pupils...I suspect they will love giving that & will probably have many ideas to share!

Finally, have they got the opportunity to share how to positively use social media? This is something perhaps for a future session...as prefects with an eye for the future how do they make sure that their 'brand' is a positive one?

Hope that's in someway helpful - do share how you get on!

Zoe

Re: Why Barefoot?

Barefoot running is the best way

Re: Digital Artistry Careers Ahead

The pupil who did that is one of the ones I have forwarded the link to. Thanks for the information about what Sigman was talking about. It's great that you're sceptical about his claims - and it's a really good thing to instill in students too! Here's a piece I wrote a while back about Sigman's approach to research, if you're interested: http://www.scilogs.com/coun...

Best,

-Pete

Re: Tom Sherrington: This is how I work

Thanks for sharing this with us Tom. I've been asking myself the same question as the post title for
some time now. I tend to agree that the formal qualifications to which your refer serve our students only poorly and are increasingly simply
about providing the means for accountability of individual teachers, the departments and schools within which they work and ultimately I guess,
the Government. They provide a quick (and dirty) mechanism for HR departments or HE admissions tutors to filter applicants. But beyond
that? I'm not sure.

I too feel that a portfolio illustrating a student's capabilities, passions and progress might provide a more rounded picture of their suitability for a particular position, though appreciate that portfolios too are not problem free. Your points are largely in the context of computing/computer science, so I wonder to what extent it is appropriate to extrapolate your arguments beyond these fields? I can't claim experience in the fields, but it appears that the artistic sectors manage quite well using the principle of portfolios, so why not others? Thanks for this critique. I too share your concern about the distorted message this sends to schools and their communities, which is at odds with much of the evidence that is often ignored by Sigman and others such as Greenfield and with my own personal experience and observations of both of my own use of social media and that of my students. Last year I wrote a piece titled Square Eyes which explains further my thoughts on the consequences of spending longer in front of screens.

Re: Restrict Screen Time: Dr Aric Sigman comes to school

Spot on Natalie. It is the common sense element. And as you say, variety and moderation applies to all things. And this needs to be thought about when anyone is saying that one thing works for all. I wasnt there, but when it comes to anything that is primarily recreational, surely "in moderation" would always be the best level, from jogging, to chess, to video games? I would also say that the key to successful teaching and learning is variety and using devices is surely part of that variety? Use a bit of everything!

Re: Kevin Fear: This is how I work

Great read - Thanks for sharing Kevin!

Re: ICT AUP Review

thanks Mark.
